Weights for double tanks, part one - 4 pounders
Please note: Lead is poisonous substance to animals. It damages the nervous system and causes brain disorders. Excessive lead also causes blood disorders in mammals. Like the element mercury, another heavy metal, lead is a potent neurotoxin that accumulates both in soft tissues and the bones. BE CAREFULL WHEN YOU WORK WITH IT, if you want to know more , please read on Wikipedia.
We did the weights in two sizes:
- the smaller triangualar one of 4 pounds
- the "bigger strip" (upcoming post) of 8 pounds
Both shapes need to fit between your double and your wing, it is also very important that the lead is not too high so you can comfortably add the wing and backplate and still be able to secure the wingnuts.
4 POUND WEIGHT , how we did it
STEP 1 : you have to find someone that will mold the lead for you.
STEP 2 : lead is a soft material so it is very easy to work with, however there are some little tricks we learned on the way and that we want to share it with you.
Drill a hole about 2 inches from one end of the weight (on the flat side).
The drill bit needs to be for metal and to be no larger than the stainless steel screw that you will screw into the weight.
We want to install the 4 pounds piece with a piece of webbing so that you can fix it in one of your tank band securing bolts (either upper or lower, depending where you will need it to trim out) and the lead will not move up and down while you are diving.
STEP 3 : when the hole is done, you can manually install the screw into the webbing (that you previously did the hole with a hot point), as you see on the picture above.
STEP 4 : tighten it up with the drill, but be careful not to over-tighten or you will make the hole bigger and the screw will fall out.
STEP 5 : make the measurement you will need to do the other hole in the other side of the webbing (by burning the webbing with a round metal point) so you can insert your webbing and weight in one of the bolts of your doubles and comfortably add wing and backplate .
STEP 6 : personalizing them is easy , just buy letters and numbers that you can stamp on it just by using your hammer
We hope you find this info useful, please contact us if you have any other queries or suggestions.
